Abstract

The impact that COVID-19 has had on the population has been reflected as well on the sales of medicinal products subject to prescription. Information from the Department of Health in Catalunya and from the National Ministry of Health has been collected in order to analyse these variations and Excel data tables have been built to illustrate the consumption of medicines made given the volume of packages and economic amounts. These products have been classified and ordered according to the therapeutical group and subgroup they belong to (ATC codes), and information about COVID-19 and its impact on people’s health has been sought. From the 137 million of packages analysed (data from Department of Health) in 2021, the most important anatomical group, with a 30% of the quota, is the nervous system that, in addition, has had an 11% of increase with regards to the period before the pandemic, being the therapeutical group of analgesics the one accountable for boosting this growth. Moreover, it has been detected that the anatomical group of anti-infective drugs has suffered the most important reduction on the volume of safes with respect to period before COVID-19 pandemic, a 26% decrease.
