Abstract
Today, the pharmaceutical industry for compound synthesis continues to use batch processing techniques. This methodology may present some difficulties due to slow kinetics, low heat and mass transfer, low reproducibility, and labour-intensive and analytical requirements. Continuous flow chemistry is a growing field in the pharmaceutical industry that can greatly improve the productivity of synthetic chemicals and intensify manufacturing processes.
The research described in this project is a study on the feasibility of a photobromination process under flow chemistry to obtain a key intermediate (Ser-5) for one of the API manufactured by Interquim S.A. Interquim S.A carried out a preliminary study of this process in flow, in which interesting initial results were obtained, which need to be developed in depth. To do this, thanks to the IQS flow chemistry team, a study of the influence of the different variables involved in the photobromination reaction is carried out, using HPLC as a fundamental technique for monitoring the reaction. To carry out these studies, the design methodology of experiments is used, since it allows to see the behaviour of the reaction according to the modification of some variables. Finally, to find the optimal ranges of the most influential variables for obtaining Ser5, a response surface study is made. This type of tools for process optimization is one of the main approaches promoted in the pharmaceutical sector encompassed in the "Quality by Design" concept.
