Abstract
European Cosmetic Regulation bans the animal testing for finished cosmetic products and cosmetic ingredients. This fact, and with the imminent global ban in 2023, forces us to propose alternatives for evaluating the efficacy, safety and toxicity of these products.
In this work transdermal permeation has been evaluated with the creation of multi-layered membranes made with chitosan and the incorporation of elastin to simulate the skin barrier in development stages of new cosmetics and transdermal drugs offering several advantages such as biocompatibility and non- toxicity, good mechanical properties and hydrophilicity.
The membranes creation has been carried out with a crosslinking reaction between the chitosan and the TPP, and two types of membranes have been created: based and activated. Activated membranes are characterized by their porosity, carried out through two different methods:
chemical; with the addition of silica particles, and physical; with the creation of pores with Dermastamp apparatus. All the membranes were characterized by means of static permeation tests with a Franz cell and rheological tests with an oscillatory procedure to verify the reproducibility of the membrane preparation method and study their porous and elastic character.
