Abstract

Lavender essential oil is recognized for its calming and relaxing properties. During pregnancy, women can experience stress, anxiety, and insomnia which affect their health and wellbeing. Since many conventional medications are contraindicated for pregnant women, there is need to find alternative therapies for alleviating their discomfort. The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of the use of lavender essential oil for stress, anxiety, and insomnia in pregnant women. A literature search was carried out in 12 databases and a total of 231 articles were found, of which only 6 met the inclusion/exclusion criteria and 3 were discussed. The results obtained demonstrate that lavender essential oil has certain efficacy. Given the lack of scientific literature, however, more studies are needed to provide further evidence on this topic.

Keywords: lavender, essential oil, pregnancy, insomnia, anxiety, stress.
