The main objective of this thesis is the development and characterization of an improved new adhesive formula to be used within the automotive industry, Product X. Sound damping properties, which are key for Liquid Applied Sound Damping materials to enhance vehicles Noise-Vibration-Harshness performance, need to be improved in order to make vehicles more comfortable for passengers, while keeping its price as low as possible and achieving the client’s requirements.
A set of formulations have been designed from an existing Henkel’s formula to enhance and achieve the desired specifications. All the requirements are tested using different techniques available in the Product Development Department for the Automotive Industry.
Characterization of the developed LASD material showed a significant improvement in its properties. Loss factor has been increased while keeping the product within a very narrow range of viscosity to avoid having future problems while robotically applying it in the manufacturing line, as well as maintaining an adequate adherence amongst others.
