Abstract
The current trend of FDA approvals shows that both cancer and infectious or parasitic diseases are the two main areas of research worldwide in the pharmaceutical sector. In this work, a bibliographic review of the drugs approved by the FDA during the last two years is carried out in order to assess the trend observed during the previous years.
This project is part of a doctoral thesis in progress in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Group of IQS where the chemical space claimed within patents is evaluated and the optimization of drugs described and approved is sought using Machine Learning tools to search for new pharmaceutical candidates. Special attention has been paid to the optimization of tafenoquine (a compound with activity against malaria). In this work, a possible synthetic route to obtain these antimalarial analogs of tafenoquine is proposed. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to carry out the proposed synthesis due to the situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
