Abstract The consequences of the accident that took place on 01/14/2020 at IQOXE, in the petrochemical area of La Canonja, Tarragona, are attributed to the MPEG 550 decomposition, the chemical product which was being produced in the affected reactor. MPEG is the polymer obtained from the polymerization of ethylene oxide and methanol. It was the combination of unfavourable and unpredictable situations that lead to this reaction, which until that moment was totally unknown. As a result of this accident, in order to prevent future damage, the need to investigate the dangers of this type of compound has emerged. Consequently, the objective proposed in this project is to design, build and start up a system that can reproduce decomposition reactions inside it. The equipment must be allowed to heat, in a controlled way, a vessel resistant to the high pressures produced by the generation of decomposition gases. Besides, it must have a system that allows them to be analysed. Subsequently, the built equipment can be used in future research to determine the mechanism of the reaction, its kinetics or the products that are generated. |
