Abstract

The main objective of this project is to study the fatigue behaviour of standardized ULTEM™ 9085 (Ultem) specimens, in order to obtain the corresponding fatigue curves in the most usual conditions of study at bending fatigue, as well as the corresponding fractographic analysis with the intention of determining the crack phenomenon, the crack origin and the crack expansion.
First, a bibliographic search has been carried out to understand the manufacturing technology used (FDM), as well as the corresponding tests regulations used. It should be noted that Ultem material is a thermoplastic, specifically a polyetherimide, together with the FDM technology are offering great opportunities, due to the manufacturing parameters of this technology influence the final mechanical properties of the material.
Next, according to the design of experiences the samples have been manufactured, while the necessary equipment for the tests has been prepared in compliance with the stipulated regulations. Once the requirements have been achieved, the standardized samples have been tested in bending fatigue to obtain the results.
To end, the bending fatigue curves have been obtained for both the yielding point and the breaking point, thus allowing to know the influence of the parameters of the technology, determining the crack phenomenon and the method of the crack propagation. In conclusion, the bending fatigue resistance has been obtained as a function of the several manufacturing parameters and the applied stress.
