The research line of this project is based on the use of Ultem in FDM technology. Ultem is a thermoplastic polymeric material with high thermal and mechanical properties, dimensional stability and chemical resistance. These characteristics make it compatible with FDM, which acronym stands for “Fused Deposition Modeling”.
The project focuses on the surface finishing methods of Ultem samples obtained by FDM. Three different methods will be studied: Shot peening, shot blasting and painting of the sam-ples.
The first part consists of literature research, with the aim of studying Ultem characteristics and establish a standard for the FDM, shot peening, shot blasting and surface painting critical involved parameters.
The next phase is to make an experimental design, required for analyze the differences be-tween samples. In which is decided the number of samples to print, according to the critical parameter and the needed tests. Shot blasted and painted samples are tested in bending and fatigue.
Finally, the results of the treated samples and the non-treated samples are compared. To determine how they have been affected and whether an improvement in properties is achieved.
