És possible una Catalunya 100% renovable?

Abstract

Energy is one of the most topical issues. Not only for environmental causes - the main reason for this work- but also due to the war in Ukraine and energy prices. This makes it necessary to realise that the European energy system is highly dependent and that there is no energetic common strategy. The question that this work makes is: Can Catalonia be 100% renewable? This would help to solve both problems: the fight against climate change and energy dependence. It is, therefore, a major issue for the whole society.
The work is part of the European energy objectives. European countries have outstanding obligations for the years 2030 and 2050, with the key purpose of carbon neutrality by 2050. The aim of this work is even more ambitious, and it wants to study whether Catalonia can be 100% renewable and energetically independent. However, the current energy situation is far from this goal. Almost 95% of the energy consumed in Catalonia, in 2019, came from fossil and nuclear fuels.
The work estimates the evolution of energy demand until 2050. Fortunately, the estimation considers a significant reduction in demand due to energy efficiency. From here, it is calculated how many energy sources are needed and the maximum technical potential of each source in Catalonia. The area is limited, the weather conditions have a few hours a year on average and the natural resources are finite.
Can Catalonia be 100% renewable? First it must be technically archivable. Then we have to be able to pay it. The resulting energy system must guarantee supply, it must be affordable, environmentally sustainable and as independent as possible.
