Abstract

Intumescent paint is a passive fire protection system widely used in the construction industry, mainly in steel structures. Although it is widely used in steel structures and has excellent thermal insulation results in this type of structure, its use was not carried out in the same way to other more sustainable materials such as wood. This TFG is composed of the investigation of the effect of intumescent paint applied to wood, specifically on plywood. To check the effect of intumescent paint on this type of wood, experimentation has been carried out on 40 different samples of plywood with and without intumescent paint applied. These 40 samples have been used to draw conclusions from the results. Many more samples were evaluated but not used to make the conclusions.
The different samples used were square plywood plates with dimensions of 10 cm x 10 cm x 2 cm. To carry out the evaluation of the different plates, the Cone calorimeter provided by the Fire Lab of the DTU has been used. Each sample was subjected to 4 different HRR values: 25 kW / m2, 35 kW / m2, 45 kW / m2 and 55 kW / m2. For each different value of HRR, a study has been made of the temperature values presented at different points on the plate, the loss of mass to which the plate is subjected as a function of time, and the ignition time. Two different arrangements of thermocouples to evaluate the temperature have been studied in this TFG, as well as an analysis of the influence of the exposed airflow on the sample. The application of the intumescent paint to the different plates has been the minimum necessary by the manufacturer in order to analyze the effect of the intumescent paint under the minimum possible requirement. Thus, the experimentation for each HRR value has to perform a minimum of 2 plates without intumescent paint and 2 plates with applied intumescent paint.
The final objective of this TFG is to be able to determine the advantages that the application of intumescent paint to wood can have. This has been done through the different samples evaluated in the laboratory as well as the different values obtained through these experiments.
