This work presents an idea to decarbonize the railway sector through solar energy. It is a project for which there is no precedent at present, but there are similar projects promoted by the public sector, Adif or Renfe that try to achieve the same objective.
The project aims to install photovoltaic panels along the train tracks to create a self-consumption system. It has begun by responding to a local solution limited to a section of track, but the project intends to give a global approach by proposing a solution applicable to all the railways in the world if the conditions are met to install solar panels and that the project be profitable. The project consists of the installation of 102,816 photovoltaic panels on a 16 km section of the Madrid-Barcelona AVE section, with a power of 35 MW, which would generate 63,000 MWh per year. The project has been limited to the design of the low voltage installation due to time constraints and all the calculations to justify the adopted solution will be shown in the supporting report. A useful life of the installation of 35 years has been considered, which would save 485 thousand tons of CO2 and 953 tons of reactive waste.
The project has a cost of 37.6 M€ and with the current energy price of 300 €/MWh has a payback of 2 years, a NPV of 292 M€ and an IRR of 46.5% over 25 years, for what the project is profitable and can be carried out.
